Outdoor (unstructured) Physical Activity

It always made me chuckle when I heard people talking about getting to the gym as a heavy responsibility, like a task. I had this vision of whoever it was way back and when, several millennium ago, Mr. CroMagnon considered whether they would go to a Cave to curl some boulders or just hit the Savanna, and be outdoors having fun. The image always came of these eyes and the saber teeth of the local Saber Tooth Tiger in the Cave-Gym awaiting their next meal. The “Got to only do it in the Gym” mentality can kind of do that to beginner’s best intentions just starting. Devour their money and for a majority nothing really happens. The number of unused, paid for gym subscriptions every January is case in point.

Let's talk about exercise, but not the kind that involves sweating it out in a crowded gym with machines that resemble torture devices. Nope, today, I want to shine a light on a more joyful approach to staying active: free and outdoor unstructured play.

Picture this: instead of counting reps and checking your watch every few minutes, imagine yourself running barefoot on the grass, playing tag with friends, or climbing trees like you did when you were a kid. Sounds pretty appealing, right? Well, it's not only appealing but also incredibly beneficial for both your physical and mental well-being.

In a world where we're constantly bombarded with images of perfect bodies and rigorous workout routines, it's easy to forget that exercise doesn't have to be a chore. It can, and should, be fun! And what better way to rediscover the joy of movement than by engaging in activities that make you feel like a carefree child again?

Here are a few reasons why embracing free and outdoor unstructured play might just be the best decision you'll make for your health and happiness:

  1. It's Good for Your Body: Unlike the repetitive motions of gym machines, outdoor play engages your entire body in dynamic movements. Whether you're jumping, running, or climbing, you're building strength, agility, and balance in a way that feels natural and enjoyable. Plus, you get the added bonus of soaking up some vitamin D from the sunshine, which is essential for bone health and mood regulation.

  2. It Boosts Creativity and Imagination: When was the last time you let your imagination run wild? Outdoor play provides the perfect opportunity to tap into your creativity and think outside the box. Whether you're building forts out of sticks or pretending to be pirates on a makeshift ship, you're giving your brain a much-needed break from the stresses of everyday life and allowing yourself to just be in the moment.

  3. It Builds Social Connections: Exercise doesn't have to be a solitary activity. In fact, some of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences come from playing with others. Whether you're bonding with old friends or making new ones, outdoor play fosters a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that can't be replicated in a gym setting. Plus, it's a great way to break the ice and meet new people in a relaxed and informal environment.

  4. It's Sustainable and Accessible: Let's face it, gym memberships can be expensive, and not everyone has access to fancy equipment or facilities. But outdoor play? It's free and accessible to everyone, no matter your age, fitness level, or socioeconomic status. All you need is a bit of open space and a willingness to let loose and have fun.

So, the next time you find yourself dreading another monotonous workout at the gym, be like Mr. CroMagnon, why not mix things up and head outside for some free and unstructured play? Whether you're tossing a frisbee, flying a kite, or simply taking a leisurely stroll (jog) or kicking a ball back and forth through the park, remember that to stay exercising make it fun, something you look forward to.

It can be a source of joy, laughter, and endless possibilities. It can be social or just simply out there in Fresh Sunshine, Mind Stimulating Green and  Outdoors breeze. So go ahead, embrace your inner child in the outer doors, and let the fun begin!

The Way Forward

  • Think about the time you went outdoors with a friend and you had a fun time exercising in an open field.

  • Make a plan at least once in a week with friends, to just go out and do something fun that helps you move your body. e.g. playing soccer, basket ball.
